my mom sent me this recently, and although it has nothing to do w/ interior design i wanted to share it . . . sometimes i feel like i have 10 jobs and have a hard time being good at all of them . . .

Balancing Working and Mothering

Striking a balance between motherhood and the rest of life's demands is no easy task. Psychotherapist Debra Gilbert Rosenberg, LCSW, offers some pointers for women faced with the urge to be all things to all people, all of the time:

Know your needs -- "It's important to strike a balance that works for you on all levels -- financially and emotionally. Listen only to your needs and the needs of your family, to establish this balance, whatever it may be."

Banish the guilt -- "If finances dictate that you work a full schedule, or if you need to work to maintain a healthy sense of personal identity, then good: Work. If this is what's best for your family, accept it. Then find nurturing child care and let the guilt go."

Be a "good enough" mother -- Rosenberg cites Donald Winnicott, a mid-20th century English pediatrician and psychoanalyst who made the concept of the "good-enough" mother famous. "You don't need to be Super Mom," she says. "Your job as a parent is to provide your children with healthy food, safe shelter, good education, love, respect, and nurturing. But no one ever said it all has to come solely from you."

Remember -- No one has it all. "'Having it all' was not what the women's movement of the 1960s and '70s was about: It was about having choice and opportunity. It's been twisted into this notion that women are supposed to have the amazing career and the amazing kids and the amazing husband and the amazing body -- all at once. Men don't have it all -- and they never have. Why do modern women believe they can have -- no, expect to have -- everything, all at once? Something has to give."

what is annie*online?

annie*online is a service offered to clients who love interior design, want some help but like to do things themselves. they are looking for direction and inspiration but still need help with color schemes and choosing furniture, fabrics, lighting and accessories, they like to do the leg work and make purchases themselves at their own pace.

how it works?  via email you will receive an in-depth questionnaire about your space as well as directions on how to measure. photos of each room you would like to work on are required with a minimum of 6 photos per room, including specific photos of windows and doorways. a drawing of the floor space with dimensions of walls, windows and height is required. you will need to include photos and dimensions of any existing pieces of furniture, lighting or accessories that you would like included in the room.

how will you know my style?  you will include any inspirational photos you have so that your ideas can be customized for you. send anything you love like tear sheets of your favorite interiors, photos from books, rooms you love, colors you love [and don’t love], favorite fabrics, photos of furniture you like. anything goes!

what is the turnaround time?  once your information sheet is received as well as any inspiration elements and payment, annie*online takes four to six weeks to complete each room and send it back to you. if the scope of the project is larger than one room then a detailed timeline will be sent to you for your approval so that we can be in agreement on the turnaround.

what will I receive from you? each room will come with it’s own beautifully packaged box with a room concept board that will include colors, sketches and inspiration images.

-a detailed floorplan with furniture, a list of resources to purchase and source, including suggestions of any items you should keep in the room.

-a folder with selections MAY include: fabric materials, samples of paint colors, wallpapers, flooring samples, window covering swatches, art and accessories. in this folder you will also find all the specific details you will need in order to resource and purchase (online or in-store) each suggested item.

rates and payment:

bedrooms- $800

living Rooms/family rooms/dens or playrooms/dining rooms/offices- $1,000 

kitchens- $1,200 

bathrooms/breakfast rooms/entry ways/hallways- $500 

baby/toddler/ rooms- $800

payment is due in full when the information sheet, images and inspirational photos have been submitted. room design will NOT begin until payment is received in full. checks and credit card via paypal are accepted. all designs are non-refundable. if you feel you have more questions or require more time on the room, an hourly rate of $75.00 for phone calls, emails and additional research will be charged with your approval.

i have a client who just recently purchased an antique piano that will live in her living room . . . we are both in agreement that it needs a lucite bench . . .

Today we ask Annie with From the desk of Annie a few questions. She’s an awesome design consultant right her in the great state of Texas. I want to ask her CMV standard questions we all ways ask.

First off, thank you Tonia for asking me to guest blog. I am truly honored.

CMV: Five words that describe your blog as it is today.
Hhhmm. Well it’s inspiring, interesting, exciting, lovely, fun.
Um, that’s what I strive for at least.

CMV: What is a typical day like for you?

Annie: 5:30 am workout, come home, shower, drink coffee, watch the news for maybe 5 mins., sneak in some work, greet my little ones when they wake up, make them breakfast, get them dressed, get myself dressed, pack their lunches, take them to school, work work work work, pick up the kids, play with them, sneak in some work, dinner with my family, bedtime, sneak in some more work, go to bed entirely too late after staying up getting distracted by interior design books, magazines or talking to my husband, curse myself for not going to bed earlier

CMV: 7 things that you love

one - my family, it’s kind of a given but honestly, my life has purpose because of them

two – interior design magazines, i cannot tell you how much I miss house & garden, domino, metropolitan home, cottage living and all those other lovely shelter magazines that once existed

three – vintage grand wagoneers, as soon as my children aren’t in carseats I am getting one. my precious grandfather drove one his entire life.

four – occasions, I love to celebrate milestones, birthdays, anniversaries, even if it’s just something like a casual gathering.

five – finding fabulous things . . . and finding them for an appreciative and excited client even more . . .

six – mexican beer with lime & salt . . . on the beach!

seven - my life . . . in Austin, Texas.

CMV: Any recent finds or purchases that you are most proud of?
Annie: A red bistro table and chairs for a most special client.

CMV:What’s in your purse you think you can’t live without?

Annie: Yikes, sometimes I just grab my wallet and iphone and go! My work bag is a different story, it has tape measures, notepads, pens, pencils, a digital camera and a ruler in it.

CMV: Anything else you'd like to tell readers ?

Annie: If you absolutely love something, BUY IT, don’t worry about the size or the scale or whatever, you will ALWAYS find a home for something you love. I PROMISE.

A console or dresser or side table can easily take on a new life when put somewhere unexpected like a foyer or kitchen nook, stick a lamp on it an some books and voila!

Rearrange, CONSTANTLY rearrange your things, move them from room to room, take them outside, bring them inside, WHATEVER, they are freshest when moved around!

Remember the importance of lighting, lamps are a statement when used the right way.

Please remember that children’s bedrooms don’t have to have children’s furniture in them. My son has an Eames rocker and a mirrored chest as well as a leather chair in his room. The best kid’s rooms have adult furniture in them. They aren’t babies forever, sadly.

Remember, the value of an interior designer is huge. They open your eyes to things, they can change the way you live in your house, they can actually save you money. They are worth it, at least the right ones are.

i am having a sheepskin moment . . . i am working on a nursery for a baby girl, we've picked out the most gorgeous osborne & little floral wallpaper, we need a rug . . . and a i think a huge sheepskin would be JUST perfect . . . let's just hope my client agrees.
